Preparing for 2008 Elections
For the past couple of years, the Cedar City Review has printed an election issue in an effort to familiarize readers with the candidates and items that will be on the ballot in November. Our mission as a community paper is to provide residents with news about the good things happening in our wonderful area, and news that will be beneficial. It is my opinion that an informed public is an empowered public. As the editor I strive to keep readers informed about the things going on in their communities, including city council decisions and election candidates. We feel strongly the importance of the democratic process, and appreciate those candidates who responded to our request for statements. We have allowed each candidate 300 words to present you with whatever they feel is most important for you to hear. This 2008 election is very important, and with the presidential spot open it is easy to focus only on that big question. However, with so many local and state spots open, and positions in the national senate and house of representatives available for our state, every vote counts. We can influence what happens close to home by who we choose to lead and represent us. It is our hope at the Cedar City Review that by reading these statements you will be able to become better informed and feel confident when you go to the polls this year. We do not wish to influence anyone one way or another, but hope you will be able to see what the candidates have to say and form your own opinions based on your values and beliefs. Thank you for reading the Cedar City Review and we hope that this issue will be helpful. We also encourage everyone to read the voter information pamphlet that was sent out in the mail, and research candidates further by viewing their Web sites and asking them questions. For those who are not registered to vote, the deadline is already passed, but we encourage them to register and take advantage of this privilege in future years. As our staff writer Cathy likes to remind us, “If you don’t vote, don’t complain.”
